In the early morning hours of July 8, 1987, a distressing 911 call led Wheat Ridge police officers to the Vickers Gas Station/Convenience Store on West 44th Avenue. Inside, they discovered the night clerk, Craig Lee Bishop, a 29-year-old White male, on the floor behind the counter near the cash register. He had sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Emergency responders acted swiftly, and Bishop was airlifted to Denver General Medical Center.
Despite the gravity of his injury, he was able to communicate with law enforcement officers before being taken into surgery. Tragically, he succumbed to the gunshot wound while on the operating table. The investigation that followed determined that money had been taken from the cash register, classifying the case as a homicide.
To this day, the death of Craig Lee Bishop remains an unsolved case. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Wheat Ridge Police Department continues to seek information from the public regarding the events that transpired on that summer morning.
