In the crisp evening of Sunday, November 15, 2015, a fatal encounter unfolded in a Walgreens parking lot in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, claiming the life of 24-year-old Guled Abdullahi Ige. An altercation in the parking lot at 4401 Wadsworth Boulevard escalated, resulting in Ige suffering a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly gained momentum as Wheat Ridge Police circulated surveillance photos from inside
the Walgreens. The images captured a woman who was believed to have been with Ige at the time of the incident. This woman, later identified as 26-year-old Wenona Sims Begay, saw the media coverage and turned herself in to the police. Initially considered a witness, investigators determined she was directly involved in the shooting and she was subsequently arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.
A second suspect was also sought in connection with Ige's death. On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, 34-year-old Marcus Whitecalf was taken into custody by Denver Police. Officers had received a tip about a stolen vehicle and, upon arrival, saw Whitecalf flee. He was apprehended a short time later. With the arrests of both Begay and Whitecalf, Wheat Ridge Police announced that all suspects in the shooting had been accounted for. Both suspects were held at the Jefferson County Jail. While the arrests brought a sense of closure to the search for suspects, the motive behind the violent altercation that ended Guled Abdullahi Ige's life was not publicly released.
