In the winter of 1994, a night in Denver turned tragic for 31-year-old John Gonzales, a white male. On the evening of January 30th, Gonzales, in the company of 28-year-old Richard Romero and several other men, had just stepped out of a vehicle in the vicinity of the 1600 block of High Street. It was a moment that would prove to be their last.
As Gonzales and Romero began to walk away from the car, an individual, who had been inside the vehicle with them, emerged and opened fire.
Both Gonzales and Romero were struck by the gunfire. The shooter then quickly got back into the car and fled the scene, leaving the two men grievously wounded.
Emergency services were called, and both John Gonzales and Richard Romero were rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, neither man would survive their injuries. The case has remained unsolved, with the suspect who committed this violent act disappearing into the night. The Denver Police Department continues to seek information from the public regarding this cold case homicide.
