On January 7, 1995, Steven Ray Johnson, a 17-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in an incident that occurred in Denver, Colorado. The events leading to his death began when Johnson and his friends went to a house located at 5547 Elkhart Street, where they were looking for a party. Upon arrival, they were confronted by the occupants of the house who were hosting the party. This confrontation escalated, and Johnson and his friends were chased away from the home.
