In the crisp autumn air of September 28, 2001, just weeks after the nation was shaken by the 9/11 attacks, a tragedy unfolded in the small community of Fremont County, Colorado, that would forever scar the local law enforcement community. Fremont County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Schwartz, a 26-year-old male, was tragically killed in the line of duty. His day took a fatal turn when he responded to a seemingly routine disturbance call about a dog being shot.
Upon his arrival at the scene, Deputy Schwartz encountered twin brothers, Joel and Michael Stovall, who were heavily armed. After an initial investigation, both brothers were arrested. One of the brothers was searched, and a gun and a knife were confiscated. However, a critical oversight during the arrest of the other brother would prove to have devastating consequences. A plastic handcuff key and a hidden gun were missed. With both brothers secured in the back of Deputy Schwartz's patrol vehicle, they managed to free themselves from their restraints using the concealed key. They then breached the barrier separating the front and back seats and shot Deputy Schwartz four times in the head while he was in the driver's seat, preparing to transport them to jail.
The brutal attack did not end there. The Stovall brothers pulled Deputy Schwartz's body from the vehicle and shot him multiple more times. After murdering the deputy, the brothers fled the scene, sparking a massive manhunt. Over the next 24 hours, their violent rampage continued as they shot at any law enforcement officers who approached them. In the ensuing chaos, 17 officers were wounded or narrowly escaped injury. Florence City Police Officer Toby Bethel was paralyzed during the intense pursuit.
The violent crime spree of the Stovall brothers finally came to an end when they surrendered and were taken into custody. For the murder of Deputy Jason Schwartz and their subsequent attacks on other officers, Joel and Michael Stovall made a plea bargain and were both sentenced to life in prison. The community of Fremont County was left to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer, whose memory is honored by his family, friends, and colleagues as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made in the line of duty.
