In the evening hours of July 31, 2015, a burst of violence in a Denver grocery store parking lot cut short the life of 17-year-old Jorge Elias Lopez-Ramirez. The Hispanic male was fatally shot at approximately 8:10 p.m. in the parking area of the Lowe's Mercado at 1320 South Federal Boulevard. Friends and family knew the teenager simply as Jorge Lopez.
The Denver Police Department responded to the shooting, and Lopez-Ramirez was transported from the scene, but the gunshot wound proved
fatal. An investigation was launched into the homicide, but details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting were scarce. The case received limited media attention in the immediate aftermath, prompting some to question if the victim's ethnicity was a factor in the muted response.
