On a summer evening in 2017, a 26-year-old woman, Lydia Coronado, was fatally shot in southwest Denver. The incident, which also left a male companion critically injured, occurred on July 16 near Huston Lake Park. Coronado, a mother of two boys, was in a car with the other victim at the time of the shooting.
The events leading to the tragic shooting began with a seemingly casual encounter. Coronado and her friend met 18-year-old Jesus Jurado-Lugo at the park.
Witnesses reported that the three were in Jurado-Lugo's truck when an argument broke out. The surviving victim later told police that Jurado-Lugo had pulled out a gun in an attempt to steal his gold necklace. When the victim resisted, he and Coronado fled to their own car. It was then that Jurado-Lugo opened fire. Despite being shot, Coronado managed to drive a block away before succumbing to her injuries. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, Jesus Jurado-Lugo was identified as the suspect, but he evaded capture and went into hiding. For years, the case remained unresolved, leaving Coronado's family and friends searching for justice. A breakthrough finally came in August 2023 when Jurado-Lugo was arrested in Mexico. He was extradited back to the United States in December of that year to face charges.
In a Denver courtroom, Jurado-Lugo pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault. In early 2025, he was sentenced to 42 years in prison for his role in the death of Lydia Coronado and the critical injury of her companion. The sentencing brought a long-awaited measure of closure to a case that had remained open for over six years.
