In the quiet residential area of Thornton, Colorado, a sequence of events tragically unfolded on the evening of January 24, 2018, leading to the death of Adams County Sheriff's Deputy Heath Gumm, a 31-year-old male. Deputies were initially dispatched to the 8700 block of Dawson Street around 7:00 p.m. following a report of an assault in progress. Upon their arrival, they encountered a male suspect who matched the description provided.
The situation escalated when the suspect fled from the deputies, initiating a foot pursuit that wound behind a nearby house. As the deputies rounded the corner of the residence, the suspect, later identified as Dreion Martise Dearing, produced a handgun and opened fire. Deputy Gumm was struck in the chest and was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Despite wearing a protective vest, the fatal bullet found an unprotected area.
In the immediate aftermath, an intense manhunt was launched for the shooter. While two other individuals were initially sought, the investigation soon focused on Dearing, who was apprehended at the scene.
