In the summer of 2019, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Denver motel, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge. The victim was identified as Omar King, a 42-year-old male. The incident, which led to his untimely death, took place on the evening of July 2nd at the Western Motel located in the 8400 block of East Colfax Avenue.
According to police reports and witness statements, the events leading up to the shooting began with an altercation.
A witness near the manager's office reported hearing screaming and saw a man, later identified as Herman Colbert, in a silver Audi. The witness stated they saw another man, later identified as King, strike Colbert at least twice in the face. Following this, as King was walking away from the vehicle, Colbert allegedly exited the Audi and fired a single shot.
When Denver Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Colbert lying face down on the ground with his arms out to his sides and a firearm a short distance away. In the east side of the parking lot, they found Omar King suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Herman Colbert was arrested at the scene and subsequently faced a charge of first-degree murder in connection with Omar King's death. Surveillance video from the motel reportedly corroborated the witness's account of the events that transpired in the motel parking lot that evening.
