In the winter of 2019, a routine patrol took a grim turn for an Adams County deputy. On the afternoon of December 23rd, near the intersection of 136th Avenue and Franklin Street, the deputy witnessed a peculiar scene: a man pulling another individual from the back seat of a full-size pickup truck. As the deputy moved closer to investigate and offer help, the driver hastily got back into the vehicle and sped away, leaving the injured man behind.
The abandoned man was 25-year-old Alejandro Antonio Villagrana, a Hispanic male from Brighton, Colorado. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower torso. Emergency services were called, and Villagrana was rushed to a nearby trauma center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died at the hospital.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the homicide, a case that initially began with a fleeing driver and an unidentified victim. Through their investigation and interviews with multiple witnesses, detectives were able to piece together the events that led to the discovery of Villagrana. Their efforts soon focused on a single individual, identifying 25-year-old Rodolfo Antonio Ramirez as the suspect in the shooting. The exact relationship between Villagrana and Ramirez, and the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter, were not publicly disclosed by the authorities.
The manhunt for Ramirez concluded just over a week later, on January 3, 2020. Acting on information, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the FBI Safe Streets Fugitive Task Force and a SWAT team, tracked the suspect to a residence on Dakin Street in Denver. Law enforcement surrounded the home and ordered Ramirez to surrender, but he refused to come out. The SWAT team then entered the house and discovered him concealed in a crawl space. Rodolfo Antonio Ramirez was taken into custody without further incident and was subsequently charged with manslaughter, a class four felony, in connection with the death of Alejandro Antonio Villagrana. He was booked into the Adams County Detention Facility.
