In the quiet town of Brighton, Colorado, concern grew for 44-year-old Joseph Johnson when he hadn't been heard from for several days. On March 28, 2023, officers were dispatched to his home in the 400 block of North 6th Avenue to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival, they made a grim discovery; inside the residence, Joseph, a White/Caucasian male, was found unresponsive, having sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
The Brighton Police Department immediately launched a homicide
investigation. Detectives quickly identified a suspect in the case: a 15-year-old female who was known to Johnson. Later that same day, around 1 p.m., the teenage girl was located and arrested in Castle Rock, Colorado. She was subsequently transported to the Brighton Police Department for processing and was later booked into the Prairie Vista Youth Services Detention Center.
The juvenile suspect faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, a Class 1 felony, and first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, a Class 5 felony. Additionally, she has been charged with possession of a handgun by a juvenile, which is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Due to her age, her identity has not been publicly released. The case is set to be handled by the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office, where a decision will be made on whether she will be tried in juvenile or district court.
