A survivor of the Cambodian genocide, Kim Phok, a 61-year-old female, built a new life in Denver, Colorado, only to have it tragically cut short. She passed away on April 24, 2020, from injuries sustained in a shooting that occurred four days prior. Phok had escaped the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, arriving in the United States as a refugee in 1981 with her husband and infant son.
Together, they established a home and welcomed a second son, embodying the resilience and hope of those who had survived unimaginable hardship.
In the early morning hours of April 20, 2020, while on her regular commute to work, the life she had so diligently built was irrevocably shattered. Phok was discovered in her white SUV, pulled over on the side of Interstate 70. She was suffering from what she described as stomach pains, but the reality was far more sinister; her vehicle had been struck by multiple bullets. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries four days later.
