When Mesa County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they were met with a chaotic scene of vehicles speeding away and people fleeing the residence. Amidst the pandemonium, they discovered 20-year-old Hugo Pablo Rodriguez, a male, with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his head.
Hugo, who grew up in the nearby town of Fruita and was a graduate of Fruita Monument High School, had arrived at the party with several friends shortly before the shooting. An altercation, described as a drunken argument, escalated to the point where handguns were drawn and shots were fired. Hugo was transported to a hospital for the grievous injury he sustained. For several months he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to the complications from the gunshot wound on January 14, 2021.
The investigation into Hugo's death, which is being treated as a homicide, has been met with significant challenges. Investigators believe that between 50 and 100 people were in attendance at the party, meaning there were numerous potential witnesses to the shooting. Despite this, many individuals who were present have refused to cooperate with the authorities, hampering the progress of the investigation.
