In the quiet, early morning hours of October 30, 2020, a tragic event unfolded at a remote farmhouse near Windsor, Colorado, that would claim the life of 30-year-old Ryan Ray Rogina. A man originally from North Dakota who had moved to Greeley, Rogina was a close friend of the family living at the home and had offered to babysit their young daughter for the night. The peace was shattered around 1:00 a.m. when Rogina was fatally shot in the driveway.
It is believed he went outside to confront a man who was attempting to steal his pickup truck.
After shooting Rogina twice in the torso, the assailant, identified as 32-year-old Trevor George, then entered the farmhouse. Inside, he attacked the young girl Rogina had been watching, strangling her. The girl's mother and her friends arrived back at the property to a horrific scene, discovering Rogina's lifeless body in the driveway. As the mother ran towards the house to check on her daughter, she was confronted at the door by George, who pointed a gun at her before fleeing the scene. The child was found alive but had been seriously assaulted; she was rushed to a hospital for treatment and was later released.
The investigation into Ryan Rogina's murder led law enforcement on a manhunt for Trevor George. He had fled the initial crime scene and was later connected to a stolen Dodge Charger Hellcat. Investigators tracked the vehicle, and George was apprehended later that same afternoon at a gas station in Fort Collins. His arrest was not without incident, as he was uncooperative, and officers had to use their vehicles to block him in and deploy a taser to take him into custody.
Trevor George was subsequently charged with a multitude of felonies, including first-degree murder for the death of Ryan Rogina, attempted murder for the strangulation of the young girl, burglary, and aggravated motor vehicle theft. He was held in the Weld County jail without the possibility of bail. In a later court appearance, George pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
