In the small town of Oak Creek, Colorado, a burst of violence on a Wednesday afternoon in February 2021 shattered the community's peace and ended the life of 24-year-old Dustyn River James. The male victim's death was part of a shooting spree initiated by 46-year-old Steven Padilla.
The tragic chain of events began when Padilla first shot and injured a man at a residence on East Highland Street. From there, he drove a few blocks to a mobile home park on Wild Hogg Drive.
Outside unit 37, Padilla opened fire before forcing his way inside.
Once in the home, Padilla attempted to shoot another man, but his handgun malfunctioned. As the man tackled him, Padilla managed to fire his weapon, fatally wounding Dustyn James and injuring a woman in the residence. In a final, decisive act, another man present in the home retrieved a firearm and shot Padilla, ending the rampage. Padilla was killed at the scene.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Steven Padilla had a history of domestic violence charges and had been released on personal recognizance bonds multiple times in the months leading up to the shooting. The case involved the Oak Creek Police Department, the Routt County Sheriff's Office, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. There were no further arrests as the sole suspect was deceased.
