In the summer of 2021, a domestic dispute in Aurora, Colorado, escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter. On the afternoon of Friday, July 30th, 40-year-old Sarah Terry Smith, a female, was shot and killed by her ex-husband, 49-year-old Robert Terry. The violent episode unfolded in front of the couple's six-year-old son.
The couple, who had a history of a tumultuous relationship, having been married and divorced twice, were reportedly arguing.
Sarah was attempting to leave with her son, who she had already strapped into his car seat, when Robert Terry emerged from their home and opened fire. He shot Sarah multiple times. After fatally wounding her, Robert Terry turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
The entire horrific event was witnessed by their young son from the backseat of the vehicle. Following the shooting, the child unbuckled himself and crossed the street to alert neighbors for help. When Aurora police arrived, they discovered Robert Terry deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound outside the residence. Sarah Terry Smith was found nearby with multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide, and therefore, no arrests were made as the sole suspect was deceased. The case highlighted a devastating instance of domestic violence, leaving a child orphaned and a family shattered by the sudden and violent loss.
