On the night of August 6, 2021, Gregory Hopkins, a 41-year-old man, was shot and killed outside Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, following a Rockies game. The incident occurred near the intersection of 22nd and Wazee streets. Hopkins, a contracted concessions worker at the stadium, had been involved in an argument earlier in the day with Javon Price, which reportedly stemmed from the two men talking to the same woman.
While his job was not a factor in the shooting, the dispute that began at his workplace tragically escalated later that evening.
After his shift, Hopkins was confronted by two men at an employee exit. Surveillance footage captured a verbal altercation before a man in a gray hoodie, later identified as Javon Price, shot Hopkins. As Hopkins attempted to flee down a set of stairs, Price pursued him, firing several more rounds at him from close range. Another person, an uninvolved bystander, was also shot and wounded during the incident. Hopkins was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The investigation led by the Denver Police Department resulted in the arrest of Javon Price. Another man, Treneil McNeal, was also implicated and arrested. McNeal was identified as the individual who provided Price with the handgun used in the shooting moments before the murder. A third man, Rayvell Powell, was also arrested in the days following the shooting, though charges against him were later dismissed. However, a new case was filed against Powell in May 2025.
Javon Price was convicted of first-degree murder in May 2025 and subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 16 years for the assault on the bystander. In September 2023, Treneil McNeal was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the crime and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
