Courtney D. Jackson, aged 43, was fatally shot on April 18, 2015, in Chicago. The incident took place on the Far Northwest side of the city. Jackson was driving his vehicle when he was struck by gunfire, after which he managed to flag down a police cruiser for help. Despite this, allegations have surfaced about how the Chicago Police Department handled the situation poorly, with some reports suggesting that Jackson did not receive prompt medical attention, which might have contributed to his

Jackson was eventually taken to a hospital, but a nurse there later stated that he was brought in wearing handcuffs, raising questions about the nature of the police response during those critical moments. His mother, Shapearl Wells, has been actively pursuing justice for her son, voicing her concerns about the adequacy of the police investigation. She has even teamed up with journalist Jamie Kalven and the Invisible Institute, a non-profit focused on investigative journalism, to shed light on her son’s case and to keep it in the public eye.
Over the years, Shapearl Wells has continued to fight for transparency, including demanding access to surveillance footage and organizing community events in her son's memory. The Chicago Office of Inspector General later recommended disciplinary action for two police officers involved in handling Jackson's case. Despite these efforts, no suspects have been apprehended, and the investigation remains unresolved, leaving Jackson's family and the community still seeking answers.
