In the cold of a late January evening in Denver, Colorado, the life of 19-year-old Kanajai Burton was tragically cut short. On January 29, 2022, gunshots shattered the night near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and North Ogden Street, leaving two young men wounded. One of them was Kanajai, a Black/African American male with a charismatic personality and an infectious laugh that had brought joy to those around him since his birth on Christmas Eve in 2002.
He was rushed to Denver Health, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The other victim, 23-year-old Elijah Kelly, died at the scene.
Kanajai, known affectionately as “Man-Man” or “KJ” to his loved ones, was described by his mother as a good kid who was never in trouble. A football player and a recent graduate of Rangeview High School, he had recently embarked on the journey of fatherhood with the birth of his son, Sekani Ky Burton. He had embraced his new role with enthusiasm, cherishing every moment with his child. His death was lamented by his family as a senseless act of gun violence, a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The investigation into the double homicide led Denver police to 18-year-old A'darion Sanford, who was arrested on the night of February 8, 2022. Sanford was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Kanajai Burton and Elijah Kelly. In a later development, Sanford accepted a plea deal, resulting in a conviction on two counts of second-degree murder.
On August 16, 2023, A'darion Sanford was sentenced to 60 years in prison, receiving 30 years for each count of second-degree murder. While the sentencing marked a legal conclusion to the case, the profound loss of Kanajai Burton continues to be deeply felt by his family and friends, who remember him as a devoted father, a beloved son, and a playful soul full of life.
