In the quiet town of Paonia, Colorado, a grim discovery shattered the community's sense of peace. On February 4, 2022, 65-year-old Donna Gallegos, a White/Caucasian female, and 69-year-old Michael Arnold were found deceased inside their home on Black Bridge Road. Friends had become concerned after not hearing from them for several days, leading to a welfare check that would uncover the tragedy.
Both Gallegos and Arnold had suffered multiple gunshot wounds in what the Delta County Sheriff's Office described as an isolated, deliberate, and targeted act.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, Mark Burns. Investigators learned that Burns had been previously evicted from the main residence on the property where the victims lived. He was apprehended in Idaho approximately two weeks after the bodies were discovered and was subsequently extradited back to Colorado to face charges. Evidence in the case included surveillance footage, though the defense contested the identification of Burns as the person in the video.
Ultimately, a jury found Mark Burns guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of robbery, one count of burglary, and a count of tampering with physical evidence. For his crimes, he received a sentence of two consecutive mandatory life sentences, in addition to another 45 years for the other convictions. The verdict brought a measure of closure to the friends and family of Donna Gallegos and Michael Arnold, as well as the wider Paonia community, which had been deeply affected by the violent loss of two of its residents.
