On a summer day in Lafayette, Colorado, the life of Nicholas Wilson, a 34-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. On June 2, 2022, police discovered his body inside a residence on Flagg Drive. An autopsy would later reveal that Wilson had been shot three times, once in the back from a distance and twice at closer range in his leg.
At the scene, law enforcement encountered Anthony Robert Franchitti and a woman who owned the home. Both individuals had already secured legal representation and declined to speak with the police. Following an investigation into the incident, Franchitti was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with deliberation in connection with Wilson's death.
The legal proceedings that followed highlighted a recent change in Colorado law regarding bond for first-degree murder suspects. Due to the repeal of the death penalty in 2020, suspects in such cases are no longer automatically held without bond. Consequently, the court was required to set a bond for Franchitti. The prosecution requested a $10 million bond, while the defense argued for $750,000. In addition to the bond, the court ordered a protection order that required the defendant to surrender all firearms and his passport, abstain from drugs and alcohol, and submit to GPS and alcohol monitoring.
