In the quiet, rural landscape of Fort Garland, Colorado, a violent encounter shattered the morning calm on August 13, 2022. Jesus Lozano, a 51-year-old male, was at a residence on Wilking Way when a disturbance erupted, leading to a fatal shooting. Lozano sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to a hospital in Alamosa, but tragically, he was pronounced deceased.
The incident prompted an investigation by the Costilla County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Initial inquiries suggested that the shooting was an isolated event and that the suspect was likely known to the victim. Investigators quickly identified Rondell W. Brown, a 25-year-old from Greeley, as a person of interest. It was believed that Brown was an acquaintance of Lozano's family. A week after the shooting, an arrest warrant was issued, and Brown was taken into custody at his home. He was initially charged with second-degree murder and three counts of felony menacing and was held on a $150,000 bond.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Rondell Brown appeared in Costilla County court and reached a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, and felony menacing with a deadly weapon. The latter charge was in connection with threats made against Lozano's fiancée and her adult son who were also present during the incident. As part of the agreement, Brown faces a potential sentence ranging from a minimum of five to a maximum of 34 years in prison. He also agreed to pay restitution for funeral and medical expenses.
