In the summer of 2017, a violent incident in Denver, Colorado, led to the death of 40-year-old Troy Funchess, a male resident of the state. The events unfolded around midnight on July 1st at the intersection of 29th Avenue and York Street, where gunshots rang out, disturbing the neighborhood. Some residents reported hearing what they initially thought were fireworks, only to be alerted by the subsequent arrival of sirens.
First responders discovered two men lying in the street with
gunshot wounds. One of the men, Don Sperow, aged 35, succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital that same night. Funchess was critically injured and transported to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Troy Funchess passed away from his injuries on the morning of July 13, 2017, nearly two weeks after the shooting.
Witnesses in the area described seeing a red sedan speeding away from the scene westbound on 29th Avenue immediately after the shots were fired. The vehicle and its occupants managed to leave the area before police arrived. In the days following the incident, the Denver Police Department announced that the shooting was being investigated as a homicide. However, authorities did not release any information about potential suspects to the public. A memorial service for Funchess was later scheduled to be held on July 20th.
