Ashley Paugh, a 35-year-old female, had traveled to Colorado Springs from her home in La Junta for a fun day with a friend. A devoted wife and mother to an 11-year-old daughter, she worked for Kids Crossing, a foster care organization, where she was passionate about finding loving homes for children. Her work often involved collaboration with the LGBTQ community to secure welcoming placements for foster children. In the days leading up to her death, she had been actively organizing and setting up 'giving trees' to brighten the holidays for foster kids in Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
On the evening of November 19, 2022, Ashley and her friend went to Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub, to see a comedian perform. While they were there, a gunman opened fire, tragically cutting Ashley's life short. She was one of five people killed in the mass shooting that night. Her husband of many years, who was her high school sweetheart, and her daughter were left to mourn the sudden and senseless loss. Her family, including her sister, expressed profound heartbreak and anger following her death.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, who was 22 years old at the time. Patrons at the club were able to subdue the gunman, who was then taken into custody by police. Aldrich was subsequently arrested on suspicion of five counts of first-degree murder and five counts of a hate crime causing bodily injury. He was later sentenced to life in prison. The attack left dozens of others injured and sent shockwaves through the Colorado Springs community and beyond.
