On a Christmas morning in Thornton, Colorado, the life of 44-year-old Melissa Susanna Martinez was tragically cut short in a violent sequence of events that concluded a history of turmoil. The female victim died on December 25, 2022, at the hands of her 46-year-old husband, Enoch Noah Apodaca, in what authorities have identified as a murder-suicide.
The day's tragedy began to unfold around 8:45 a.m. when Apodaca was seen at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 68. Shortly after he left the building, a large explosion occurred, though no one was injured. The violence then escalated at a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall. Apodaca had Martinez drive a pickup truck to a window of the building. He then broke the window and threw three explosive devices inside, none of which detonated, though one started a small fire that was extinguished by one of the two people inside the hall at the time.
After throwing the devices, both Apodaca and Martinez exited the vehicle. It was at this point that Apodaca fatally shot Martinez before turning the gun on himself. The investigation that followed uncovered a history of threatening behavior from Apodaca. He had been fired from his job as an electrician in June 2021 and had subsequently made threats to kill his wife and a union representative. A search of the couple's Westminster home revealed bomb-making materials and personal items that had been organized for distribution to family members. As the perpetrator of the murder was also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with Melissa Susanna Martinez's death.
