On a tragic Wednesday evening, November 1, 2017, the life of 52-year-old Pamela Marques was cut short in an act of senseless violence. A resident of Denver, Colorado, she was inside a Walmart Supercenter in the nearby suburb of Thornton when a gunman opened fire. The chaotic scene unfolded around 6:10 p.m., sending shoppers and employees fleeing in panic. Marques was critically injured in the shooting and rushed to a local hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Two other individuals, Carlos Moreno, 66, and Victor Vasquez, 26, were also killed in the attack.
The gunman, who witnesses said walked into the store and began shooting randomly, fled the scene, sparking a nationwide manhunt. The following day, law enforcement apprehended Scott Allen Ostrem, then 47, after a brief chase in the nearby city of Westminster. Ostrem, a resident of the same apartment building as one of the victims, was described by neighbors as a loner who was often angry and rude. He had a history of previous arrests, though the motive for the shooting remained unclear to investigators. The three victims were of Latino descent, while Ostrem is white, which led to questions about a possible hate crime, though this was not officially determined as the motive.
Following his arrest, Scott Allen Ostrem was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. After a delay to determine his competency to stand trial, a judge ruled in June 2018 that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed. On October 10, 2018, Ostrem pleaded guilty to the shooting. He was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison, plus an additional 48 years, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life behind bars for the devastating attack that claimed the lives of Pamela Marques and two others.
