On November 17, 1911, Special Deputy Sheriff A.L. Smithers and Deputy Sheriff Thomas Hall of the Luna County Sheriff's Department in Deming, New Mexico, were fatally shot while attempting to apprehend an escapee from the county jail.

The suspect had previously escaped custody, prompting the deputies to pursue and arrest him. During the arrest attempt, the suspect opened fire with a rifle, resulting in the deaths of both officers.
