On August 17, 1979, 40-year-old Lieutenant Owen Arthur Landdeck of the Farmington Police Department in New Mexico tragically lost his life during a police academy training exercise. Lieutenant Landdeck was role-playing as a deranged husband in a simulated domestic violence scenario. The exercise required him to draw a firearm, prompting a cadet to respond with simulated gunfire.
