On July 13, 1988, Sergeant Thomas Arlen Richmond of the Mesilla Marshal's Office was tragically shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on Snow Road, just outside the town limits of Mesilla, New Mexico. At the time of the stop, Sergeant Richmond was unaware that the individuals in the vehicle he had pulled over were suspects in an armed robbery that had occurred earlier in Las Cruces.
