On March 22, 2014, the 29-year-old man was caught in a heated argument. The dispute, which also involved a third individual, escalated to a point of no return. In the midst of the confrontation, a firearm was discharged, and Giese was fatally wounded.

The investigation into the shooting identified his girlfriend, 23-year-old Meagan Sayre, as the one responsible for his death. The events of that night led to her arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. In court, Sayre faced the family of her late boyfriend and offered an apology for her actions. She was ultimately convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the shooting death of Giese. For her role in the incident, the judge sentenced her to 18 months of probation. A condition of her sentence offered a conditional discharge, meaning the conviction would not be on her permanent record if she successfully completed her probation term.
