On October 28, 2014, Jeremy Martin, a 29-year-old deputy with the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, was fatally shot at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The incident occurred during a work trip when Martin and his partner, Tai Chan, had checked into the hotel after dropping off a prisoner at an Arizona prison. Following their arrival, the two deputies visited several restaurants, where they consumed alcohol, leading to a heated argument.
