On October 28, 2014, Jeremy Martin, a 29-year-old deputy with the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, was fatally shot at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The incident occurred during a work trip when Martin and his partner, Tai Chan, had checked into the hotel after dropping off a prisoner at an Arizona prison. Following their arrival, the two deputies visited several restaurants, where they consumed alcohol, leading to a heated argument.
The dispute escalated upon their
return to their shared hotel room on the seventh floor of the Hotel Encanto. Witnesses reported continued bickering between the two men. The situation turned deadly when Chan, armed with what is believed to be his duty weapon, chased Martin and opened fire on him as Martin attempted to enter an elevator. Martin was found by police officers in the hotel lobby, bleeding profusely from several gunshot wounds to his back and arms, just after midnight.
Tai Chan, who was 27 years old at the time and a nearly three-year veteran of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, was identified as the suspect. Chan had no prior disciplinary problems and had recently been commended by the sheriff for his role in tracking down and returning stolen items to a family that had been burglarized. Despite his commendable service record, Chan's actions that night led to his arrest. Police tracked him down to a stairwell near the hotel roof and took him into custody.
The shooting had a profound impact on the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, with Sheriff Robert Garcia describing it as a tragedy for the entire law enforcement family. Martin was remembered as a great dad, husband, and family man who always put others first. He left behind a pregnant wife, Sarah Martin, and three young children aged 4, 9, and 11.
Tai Chan was subsequently charged with an open count of murder. However, his trials were marked by significant legal challenges. Chan was tried twice for Martin's murder, but both trials ended in hung juries, failing to reach a verdict.
In a third attempt to prosecute, the case against Tai Chan was once again presented, but ultimately, the charges were dismissed.
