In the early hours of April 29, 2024, the life of 34-year-old Hispanic male Steven Sanchez was tragically cut short in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Police were called to a residence on the 1900 block of Princess Jeanne Drive around 3:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Sanchez in a backyard shed with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, just one day after his 34th birthday.
Witnesses at the home told investigators that Sanchez had gone into the backyard with another man, identified as 25-year-old Isaiah Joseph Rea. Shortly after the two men went outside, a gunshot was heard. Rea then reportedly re-entered the house, holding a black firearm, and made a cryptic comment to the effect of, "I thought that's what he wanted me to do." Another person then came inside and announced that Steven had been shot.
In the wake of the shooting, the Las Cruces Police Department identified Isaiah Joseph Rea as the primary suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. Authorities warned the public that Rea was to be considered armed and dangerous, prompting a manhunt. The search for Rea concluded a few days later on May 2, when Las Cruces police officers located and apprehended him on the 200 block of Three Crosses Avenue after a brief vehicle pursuit.
Following his arrest, Isaiah Joseph Rea was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center and held without bond. He was later convicted of the murder of Steven Sanchez. In July 2025, a judge sentenced Rea to 20 years in prison for the crime. While the legal proceedings have concluded, authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting that ended Steven Sanchez's life.
