On March 25, 2018, a tragic incident occurred in the community of Garfield, New Mexico, north of Hatch, where Mario Cabral, a 34-year-old man, and his girlfriend, Vanessa Rodriguez, 32, were found dead. The bodies were discovered by sheriff's deputies and a Hatch police officer inside a home, with Cabral found in a pool of blood due to gunshot wounds to his head and torso.
