Summary based on 1 source
On the morning of July 23, 1991, 19-year-old Linda Airut was one of eight people who departed from Igloolik, Nunavut, for Hall Beach, Nunavut. The group was traveling in a 24-foot freighter canoe powered by a 30-horsepower outboard motor. The journey was undertaken on a day marked by stormy weather and heavy rain. Approximately 15 miles north of their destination, the canoe struck submerged ice, causing it to take on water and capsize in the frigid Arctic waters. The sudden and tragic event cast seven individuals, including Linda Airut, into the unforgiving environment.

The sole survivor of the incident was a man named Abraham Oolalak. He managed to cling to a piece of ice for 24 hours before being rescued. A search and rescue effort was launched, involving forty people and fourteen boats. However, the search was severely hampered by the presence of heavy ice in the area. Tragically, after a week of searching, the official operation was called off as it was deemed unlikely that any of the other seven individuals could have survived in the harsh conditions. The canoe was eventually located, but Linda Airut and the others were not.

Among the seven people who were lost were several members of the Oolalak family, including young children. The lone survivor, Abraham Oolalaaq, endured the immense loss of his wife and three of their children in the accident. The case of Linda Airut and the six others who vanished that day remains a profound tragedy within the Nunavut community. While they are presumed to have perished in the accident, they are still officially considered missing. The story serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers of travel in the Arctic and the deep and lasting impact of such a sudden loss on a close-knit community.
