In the small city of Artesia, New Mexico, the life of 36-year-old Fabian Ochoa was abruptly ended on the night of October 27, 2018. A violent encounter unfolded near the intersection of 4th Street and Logan Avenue, where gunfire erupted, shattering the evening quiet. When police arrived, drawn by multiple reports of shots fired, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of them was Fabian Ochoa, a Hispanic male known to many as "Chapo."
Both injured men were rushed to Artesia General Hospital, but Ochoa's injuries proved to be fatal. He succumbed to his wounds at the hospital, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence. The other man, who was also shot during the incident, survived. Investigators at the scene collected approximately 50 spent shell casings, a stark indicator of the intensity of the confrontation. The motive behind the shooting was later determined to be a dispute involving drugs and firearms.
The investigation into Ochoa's death continued for several months. Then, in February 2019, a breakthrough came as authorities identified and arrested three suspects in connection with the murder. Jose Ruiz was taken into custody in Roswell and faced a charge of first-degree murder. His brother, Julio Ruiz, and another man, Michael Martin, were also charged in Ochoa's death. At the time the charges were brought against them, both Julio Ruiz and Michael Martin were already incarcerated on unrelated offenses. All three men had prior felony convictions and faced the possibility of life in prison if found guilty of the charges against them.
