In the quiet city of Artesia, New Mexico, a fatal encounter unfolded on the morning of October 12, 2023, claiming the life of Mark Owen Rommel, a 42-year-old White/Caucasian male. The events transpired in the parking lot of the Artesia Public Safety Complex, a place ironically designed for security and order. A dispute between two men escalated with shocking suddenness, culminating in a burst of gunfire that left Rommel dead at the scene.
He was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
The investigation, led by the New Mexico State Police, soon identified the shooter as Acadio Alonzo Lucero of Artesia. It was revealed that the conflict stemmed from a fraught connection to the same woman, with whom both men had been involved at different times. Lucero had arrived at the public safety complex with the woman, aware that Rommel would also be present for a planned child custody exchange. Though witness accounts suggest an initially non-hostile conversation between the two men, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Lucero retrieved a firearm and fired multiple rounds at Rommel, who was unarmed.
In the immediate vicinity of the unfolding tragedy, an Artesia Police Department officer witnessed the assault and intervened. The officer fired at least one round, striking Lucero and bringing the attack to a halt. Lucero was subsequently airlifted to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. Despite his later claim of self-defense, investigators found that Lucero had deliberately armed himself before the encounter.
Following the investigation, Acadio Alonzo Lucero was arrested and charged with the murder of Mark Owen Rommel. In June 2025, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
