On February 27, 2019, 25-year-old Amanda Gonzales Madrid was fatally shot outside a Family Dollar store near Wyoming and Central in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The incident occurred following a verbal altercation between Amanda and another woman, Maiah Madrid-Schleicher, as they were getting into their respective vehicles. The confrontation escalated, leading Madrid-Schleicher to discharge a firearm from her vehicle, striking Amanda, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene provided a license plate number to the authorities, which facilitated the swift arrest of 26-year-old Maiah Madrid-Schleicher. She was charged with voluntary manslaughter and shooting from a motor vehicle. Court records revealed that Madrid-Schleicher had a prior criminal history, including arrests for battery on an officer and auto burglary.
In April 2021, Madrid-Schleicher was found guilty of the charges against her. Subsequently, in June 2021, she was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the shooting death of Amanda Gonzales Madrid.
