In the early hours of May 4, 2019, a promising life was tragically cut short in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jackson Weller, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot outside a nightclub in the Nob Hill area. A student and a right-handed pitcher for the University of New Mexico's baseball team, Weller was originally from Keller, Texas. Although he was not on the active roster at the time due to an injury, he remained a part of the team and had aspirations of returning to the mound.
On the night
of the incident, Weller and his teammates were out at local bars after a game. Witnesses reported that a physical altercation occurred inside one of the establishments involving Weller. Later, outside the club, Weller was shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation did not immediately identify a suspect, leaving a community and a university in mourning over what was described as a senseless act of violence.
The Albuquerque Police Department launched a thorough investigation, which led them to identify Darian Bashir as the primary suspect. Security footage and witness testimony played a crucial role in his identification. According to reports, while Weller had been in a fight earlier that evening, Bashir was not directly involved in that altercation. Instead, it is believed that Bashir sought revenge for the fight, which had involved his friends. Following the shooting, Bashir fled the scene and reportedly asked his girlfriend to conceal the license plate of the vehicle he was in.
Less than a week after the fatal shooting, authorities located and arrested Darian Bashir. He was charged with an open count of murder. During the trial, prosecutors presented the case that the shooting was a deliberate act of vengeance. Bashir’s defense team argued that he felt threatened by Weller and his friends. In November 2021, a jury found Darian Bashir guilty of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The verdict brought a measure of justice to Jackson Weller's family and friends, though the loss of the young athlete continues to be deeply felt by those who knew him.
