On February 4, 2021, New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott, a 28-year-old father of three with a fourth child on the way, was tragically killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in southern Luna County, New Mexico. Officer Jarrott was assisting members of the United States Homeland Security Investigations as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.
The subject of the traffic stop was Omar Felix Cueva, a 39-year-old man from Deming, who was en route to Las Cruces to participate in a drug deal involving the sale of 5 pounds of methamphetamine.
During the traffic stop, Officer Jarrott approached the passenger side of Cueva's pickup truck, following standard protocol for safety on a major highway. Jarrott asked Cueva if he had a firearm, and when Cueva acknowledged having a rifle, Jarrott requested that he surrender it. However, instead of complying, Cueva opened fire on Officer Jarrott with an AR-15 style rifle, shooting him at least once across the pickup truck's bed and then fatally shooting him point-blank in the back of the head as Jarrott ducked and fell.
The shooting prompted a nearly 40-mile chase along Interstate 10 into Las Cruces. Cueva fled the scene, and officers from multiple law enforcement agencies, including New Mexico State Police and the Las Cruces Police Department, pursued him. During the chase, Cueva stopped his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at officers before continuing to evade them. Eventually, tire deflation devices and other maneuvers were used to force the fleeing vehicle off the highway. As the vehicle came to a stop, Cueva exited the truck and engaged in a shootout with the pursuing officers. He was ultimately killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The suspect, Omar Felix Cueva, had a violent criminal history, including drug trafficking charges, although these were not in New Mexico. Cueva had informed an undercover HSI agent that he was not going back to jail, indicating his intent to resist arrest at all costs. The undercover operation had planned for either a traffic stop by State Police or an arrest by HSI agents in armored vehicles when Cueva was to meet for the drug deal. However, it appears that Officer Jarrott may not have been fully informed about the extent of Cueva's dangerousness and the specifics of the undercover operation.
Officer Jarrott's death marked the first time a New Mexico State Police officer had been shot and killed in the line of duty in more than 30 years. He was laid to rest on February 12, 2021, at Shakespeare Cemetery in Lordsburg during a private burial. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation later paid off the mortgage on the Jarrott family's home as part of its 2021 Season of Hope initiative.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was clear that the events unfolded rapidly and unexpectedly, highlighting the inherent dangers of law enforcement work. The video footage of the incident, reviewed by retired Las Cruces Police Department officers, underscored the difficulty in preparing for such sudden and violent confrontations.
