Elias Otero, a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was known for his great sense of humor and for being the voice of reason. A former corrections officer for the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he was brave, strong, and deeply protective of his family, especially his brothers. His life was cut short on February 11, 2021, when he made the ultimate sacrifice to save one of them.
The tragedy began in the early morning hours when Elias’s younger brother, Nicholas, went to
meet a woman he had connected with on social media. The meeting was a setup. When Nicholas arrived, he was ambushed by several people, including 17-year-old Adrian Avila and 18-year-old Anna Bella Dukes. The group carjacked Nicholas, forcing him into his own red Lexus at gunpoint. They stripped him of his cash, jewelry, and credit cards before demanding more money and a weapon. The assailants then drove Nicholas to the Otero family home on Timothy Court S.W. and forced him to call Elias, threatening to kill him if his brother didn't bring money and a gun outside.
Elias emerged from the house to confront the attackers and protect his brother. During the confrontation, Adrian Avila fired a gun, striking and killing Elias in the street. As the suspects fled the scene, Nicholas managed to escape.
Albuquerque police investigators identified Avila and Dukes as the primary suspects, linking a vehicle used in the crime to a separate carjacking. In December 2021, Avila turned himself in to authorities, and Dukes was arrested the following month in January 2022. Both were charged with an open count of murder, kidnapping, two counts of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy.
The case sparked public concern in March 2022 when a judge ordered Adrian Avila, who was also a suspect in the 2020 murder of Donnie Jacob Brandon, to be released on a GPS ankle monitor pending trial. Prosecutors immediately appealed the decision, and the New Mexico Supreme Court reversed the lower court's order, ensuring Avila remained in custody.
In April 2024, Adrian Avila pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and kidnapping for his roles in the deaths of both Elias Otero and Donnie Brandon. He apologized to the victims' families in court and was sentenced to 29 years in prison. Anna Bella Dukes received a five-year sentence for armed robbery. Elias's mother, Alicia Otero, who co-founded the group New Mexico Crusaders for Justice after her son's murder, spoke in court about the immeasurable loss her family had suffered.
