On June 20, 2021, 29-year-old Raymond Ortiz Jr. was fatally shot in Albuquerque's International District. Witnesses reported that Ortiz escaped from the trunk of a vehicle near Chico Road and Pennsylvania Street, only to be pursued by two men who beat him with a bat and then shot him multiple times. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
