On New Year's Eve of 2021, the life of 17-year-old White/Caucasian male Joshua Vigil was tragically cut short in the small community of Riberia, New Mexico. A party, intended to ring in the new year, became the backdrop for a fatal confrontation that would forever alter the lives of two families. Inside the residence located at 8 El Gasnate, an altercation erupted between Vigil and another teenager, Joaquin Sanchez, who was an 18-year-old classmate.
The dispute escalated with shocking
suddenness, culminating in a single act of violence. Sanchez, the owner of the home where the party was being held, discharged a firearm, striking Vigil. By the time New Mexico State Police officers from the Las Vegas Uniform Bureau arrived at the scene around 10:21 p.m., they found Joshua Vigil inside the residence, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The Office of the Medical Investigator later pronounced him dead at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the investigation quickly centered on Joaquin Sanchez. He was taken into custody by law enforcement without incident and subsequently booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center. Sanchez was charged with second-degree murder and negligent use of a deadly weapon. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau took charge of the case, piecing together the events that led to the deadly encounter between the two West Las Vegas High School classmates. The case was later moved to be tried outside of the local area to ensure an impartial trial, given the close-knit nature of the community and the connections between those involved.
