On May 15, 2022, a dispute between coworkers at an oil field in Malaga, New Mexico, turned fatal, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Avery Kadeem Weathers, a Black/African American man. The incident occurred south of Carlsbad where Weathers was employed. An argument erupted between Weathers and his colleague, Tevin Devonta O'Brien Morrissette, who was 29 at the time and originally from Alabama.
According to reports, the two men had been drinking together when their conversation
shifted to the topic of religion, sparking a heated disagreement. The verbal altercation escalated into a physical fight. At some point during the struggle, Morrissette is alleged to have retrieved a firearm from a vehicle. A coworker reportedly attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, but was unsuccessful.
Morrissette then allegedly shot Weathers, who sustained at least one gunshot wound and died at the scene. When law enforcement arrived, they found Morrissette with bruises, cuts, and a dislocated shoulder. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the homicide. Morrissette was booked into the Eddy County Detention Center.
