On May 15, 2022, a dispute between coworkers at an oil field in Malaga, New Mexico, turned fatal, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Avery Kadeem Weathers, a Black/African American man. The incident occurred south of Carlsbad where Weathers was employed. An argument erupted between Weathers and his colleague, Tevin Devonta O'Brien Morrissette, who was 29 at the time and originally from Alabama.
