Aftab Hussein's murder was one of the four homicides that occurred over several months, all of which were linked by the common elements of the victims' race and religion.

The police identified a key piece of evidence – a dark gray or silver four-door Volkswagen, believed to be a Jetta or Passat with dark tinted windows, which was suspected of being used in all four homicides. This vehicle was crucial in tracking down the suspect.
The suspect, Muhammad Syed, a 51-year-old Afghan refugee, was identified and arrested on August 9, 2022. Syed was connected to the crimes through various pieces of evidence, including bullet casings found at the crime scenes and a gun discovered during a search of his home. Surveillance video showed a gray Volkswagen sedan fleeing the scene after Hussein was shot, which matched the description of Syed's vehicle. Tips from the public and additional surveillance footage helped detectives to identify Syed as the owner of the car.
Syed was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, including the murder of Aftab Hussein, as well as four counts of tampering with evidence. The indictment was the result of a grand jury's deliberation, which found sufficient evidence to link Syed to the crimes. Cell phone records and a note on Syed's phone mentioning the murder as a test of an AK-47, later found under his bed, were among the key pieces of evidence presented during the trial.
In March 2024, Muhammad Syed was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Aftab Hussein in the first of three trials. The verdict was reached after just three hours of deliberation by the jury, who were presented with strong evidence, including cell records showing Syed's phone circling the murder scene. This conviction marked a significant milestone in the case, providing some relief to the victims' families and the Muslim community, although the motive behind the killings remains unclear.
Syed is currently facing life in prison for the murder of Aftab Hussein and will stand trial in the coming months for the murders of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain and Naeem Hussain.
