On a quiet street in Everett, Massachusetts, the life of 65-year-old Dorothy Philbrook, a beloved mother and grandmother, came to a violent end on the evening of August 17, 2007. Neighbors knew her as "Auntie," a kindly woman fond of children, making the tragic events of that night even more shocking to the peaceful community.
Earlier in the evening, at approximately 8:22 p.m., the sound of gunshots shattered the calm on Sea Street.
Dorothy was found outside her home, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her head, back, and neck. She had managed to make it to a neighbor's porch before collapsing and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported hearing three shots and a man's voice yelling. The immediate investigation, aided by several eyewitness accounts, quickly pointed to one suspect: her 70-year-old ex-husband, George Philbrook.
Despite having been divorced for many years, Dorothy and George had been living together in the same Sea Street residence for the past 25 years. Their relationship was described as stormy and filled with constant fighting. In the week leading up to the murder, George had confided in his granddaughter that he believed Dorothy had stolen a significant amount of money from him to purchase lottery tickets and had threatened to kill her if he could prove it.
