The incident that led to her death occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Forge Village Road. Her husband, Fredrick "Rick" Leduc, was identified as the suspect in her killing. Two days after the incident, on January 11, 2010, Fredrick was arrested.
Karen was a devoted mother to three sons: Joshua, Jared, and Justyn. She had been a resident of Westford for nineteen years. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on May 19, 1966, she grew up in Pelham, New Hampshire, and graduated from Pelham High School in 1984. At the time of her passing, she was employed at Valley Green Landscaping in Westford. Known for her enjoyment of shopping, fashion, and spending time with her friends, Karen was a cherished member of her community. She and her husband had celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on November 5, 2009.
In a Lowell Superior Court, Fredrick Leduc, then 49, pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree. This plea came after a considerable delay in the legal proceedings. The presiding judge sentenced him to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 15 years. The Middlesex District Attorney's office commended Karen's family for their strength and cooperation throughout the three-year ordeal. The case was highlighted as a tragic example of domestic violence. Following her death, Karen's mother took on the responsibility of raising her two youngest sons.
