On a cold winter evening in Westford, Massachusetts, the life of 17-year-old Olivia Mary Marchand was tragically cut short. A senior at Westford Academy, Olivia was known for her academic excellence and had a promising future ahead, with plans to study environmental sciences at the University of Vermont. She was a vibrant young woman, remembered by friends and family for her love of nature, animals, and her infectious, optimistic spirit.
On February 1, 2010, this bright future was
extinguished in an act of domestic violence. Inside their family home, Olivia's father, Brian Marchand, fatally shot her. He also turned the gun on his wife, Jody Marchand, inflicting severe injuries that she would survive. In the immediate aftermath of the attack on his daughter and wife, Brian Marchand then took his own life.
The events of that night began to unfold after two 911 calls were abruptly ended from the Marchand residence. When a dispatcher called back, it was Olivia who answered, stating that police assistance was not needed. Tragically, it was while she was still on the phone with the dispatcher that her father opened fire. Responding officers discovered Olivia, her mother, and her father in the master bedroom.
In the wake of this devastating loss, there were no arrests to be made, as the perpetrator had died by his own hand. The community of Westford mourned the loss of a young woman described as caring, independent, and full of life. Olivia's mother, Jody, has since become a vocal advocate against domestic violence and for gun safety, sharing her harrowing story to prevent similar tragedies and to keep the memory of her beloved daughter alive.
