On the evening of November 22, 2010, in the quiet town of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic event that claimed three lives. Kimberly Nguyen, a 35-year-old Asian woman, was shot and killed by her boyfriend, 51-year-old Joseph Cummings, in their home on Ledge Road. Kimberly, who was pregnant with Cummings' child, became the victim of a senseless act of violence that stemmed from a disagreement over the naming of their unborn baby.
The dispute reportedly
began when Kimberly expressed her desire to hyphenate their child's last name, a wish that Cummings did not agree with. The argument, which took place in their second-floor bedroom, ended with Cummings fatally shooting Kimberly. The violence did not stop there. Kimberly's 29-year-old sister, Lilly Nguyen, was in an adjoining room and heard the gunshots. In a desperate attempt to save her own life, Lilly jumped from a second-story window. However, Cummings saw her on the lawn below and shot her as well, ending her life.
Present in the house at the time of the shootings was Kimberly's 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. The young girl managed to hide in another room and remained there until she heard the final gunshot. She then bravely fled to a neighbor's house to seek help. Following the murders, Joseph Cummings turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
Investigations into the incident revealed that Cummings was not licensed to carry firearms, yet two handguns were recovered from the scene. While there were no prior reports of domestic violence at their Lynnfield home, it was discovered that Cummings had a history of domestic violence, with restraining orders filed against him by two other women in 1998 and 2003. The community was left in shock by the sudden and brutal nature of the crime, mourning the loss of the two sisters. Friends and customers of Kimberly's East Boston nail salon remembered her as a kind and hardworking woman who was excitedly awaiting the birth of her second child.
