On the evening of November 22, 2010, a heated argument shattered the peace in a Lynnfield, Massachusetts home, culminating in a tragic sequence of events that claimed the life of 29-year-old Lilly Nguyen. The dispute reportedly began between Lilly’s pregnant sister, 35-year-old Kimberly Nguyen, and her boyfriend, 51-year-old Joseph Cummings, over the naming of their unborn child.
Kimberly wished to hyphenate the baby's last name, a desire that Cummings did not share.
The disagreement escalated with horrifying speed. In their second-floor bedroom, Cummings shot and killed Kimberly. Hearing the gunshots from an adjoining room, Lilly attempted a desperate escape, jumping from a second-story window onto the lawn below. However, Cummings saw her and fired, fatally wounding her as she lay injured.
A 12-year-old girl, Kimberly's daughter from a previous marriage, was also in the house at the time. She managed to hide in a bedroom until the shooting ceased and then fled to a neighbor's house to seek help, from where a 911 call was made.
The perpetrator of this violence, Joseph Cummings, had a history of domestic violence, though no such incidents had been reported in Lynnfield. He was not licensed to carry firearms, yet police recovered two handguns from the scene. After killing both Lilly and Kimberly Nguyen, Cummings turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. The investigation concluded that Cummings was the sole person responsible for the deaths of the two sisters in what was determined to be a double murder-suicide.
