On a cold February night in 2016, the life of a promising young Black / African American man, Drake L. Scott, was cut tragically short. The 23-year-old, known to many by his rapper personas PrettyBoii Shankz and Young Simba, was at the City Limits Saloon on North Main Street in Randolph, Massachusetts. He had just finished a performance during an open mic night, a stage he was familiar with, when he stepped outside into the early morning hours of February 17th.
It was there, at approximately 1 a.m., that his life came to a violent and sudden end.
In what prosecutors would later describe as an "execution-style murder," Scott was shot at point-blank range. The attack was brutal and swift, leaving him with multiple gunshot wounds. Police who were already in the vicinity responding to a different disturbance heard the gunshots and were on the scene almost immediately. Their quick response led to the rapid apprehension of a suspect near the bar. The man taken into custody was 36-year-old Gregory Wright of Randolph. The encounter with law enforcement was reportedly violent, with Wright allegedly kicking a police officer during his arrest.
The investigation that followed sought to piece together the events of that fateful night. Authorities found no apparent connection or prior relationship between Drake Scott and Gregory Wright. In court, it was stated that there was no interaction between the two men inside the bar that would explain the ensuing violence. This lack of a clear motive made the killing all the more senseless to a grieving community. Wright was subsequently charged with murder, assault and battery on a police officer, and several other offenses.
Gregory Wright's trial brought to light the chilling details of the murder. Evidence presented showed that after initially shooting Scott in the head, Wright continued to fire his weapon repeatedly as the young man lay defenseless on the ground. Wright's defense team argued that he suffered from severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder stemming from past traumas, which caused him to have an extreme paranoid reaction. However, the jury was not swayed by this defense. In January 2019, after less than a full day of deliberation, they found Gregory Wright guilty of first-degree murder. The conviction brought a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that the man responsible for the senseless death of Drake Scott would be held accountable for his actions.
